Who you are
Virgin Galactic is seeking a mid-level experienced Airframe & Powerplant Technician to support our commercial space operations department. The candidate must have a desire to work with a team of professionals, enthusiasm for aerospace maintenance, and experience with acrobatic aircraft. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. The work location is at both Las Cruces international and Spaceport America. The candidate must be willing to travel between Las Cruces International Airport and Spaceport America. (A company vehicle will be provided for this purpose.)

Contract 9 to 12 months.

Your Responsibilities

  • Responsible for accomplishing assigned maintenance, preventive maintenance and repair work on the support asset team vehicles. (aerobatic aircraft such as the GB1 Gamebird and Extra 300L)
  • Checks, dismantles, adjusts, repairs, fabricates, removes and installs aircraft parts that may include propulsion systems, avionics equipment & instruments, fuel systems, environmental systems, and mechanical and hydraulic systems.
  • Inspects aircraft, parts, sub-assemblies and completed assemblies to determine airworthiness.
  • Shall return aircraft to service after maintenance and inspection in accordance with 14 CFR Part 43.9 and 43.11
  • Shall be required to document all work performed utilizing the Virgin Galactic approved database for compliance and recordkeeping.
  • Will be required to perform servicing, maintenance, and inspections on flightlines and in non-climate controlled hangars.
  • Must be competent using basic functions of the MS Office suite of tools.

What you bring

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • A valid FAA approved Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) Certificate.
  • A valid passport and able to obtain a driver’s license.
  • Minimum 3 years General Aviation (GA) line and base maintenance experience; 5 years preferred.
  • Firm grasp of procedures applicable to the various phases of maintenance.
  • Familiarity with life support systems (crew and passenger).
  • The ability to assume responsibility for the administration of policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated aptitude to work under pressure and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Display’s maturity of action and judgment.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Willing to travel and be on-call.
  • Qualified to obtain Air Operations Area (AOA) access.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • FAA Inspection Authorization (IA)
  • Graduated from a technical college or other recognized apprenticeship program.
  • Experience with Lycoming engines.
  • Experience with aerobatic aircraft such as the GB1 Gamebird, Extra
  • Experience with composite aircraft (commercial or military aerospace application).
  • General knowledge of inverted oil systems.

Physical and/or Additional Requirements

  • Work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed.
  • Travel between work sites in Las Cruces and Spaceport America
  • Travel 5% or more of the time.
  • Stand for extended periods – 8 hours min.
  • Stoop, bend, crawl, and being able to maneuver in tight spaces- 3+ hours min.
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 40lbs (unassisted).

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.

The hourly rate (USD) range for this contract position is $45.00 – $55.00. The hourly rate actually offered will vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, location, and experience and take into account internal equity.
